Spotlight on Serie A

The International break is upon us, therefore I have opted to take a look at the Team Statistics thanks to whoscored.com after the first seven game weeks in Serie A.

The Old Lady guided by Maurizio Sarri are the only side who are yet to experience a defeat in the league, however there are many interesting statistics to explore.

Serie A Positional Statistics

Is it best to attack down the left or right hand side?

Taking into consideration the above data, it is clear to see that there is a positive relationship between attacking side and league position. The average league position of the top five sides who focus their attacks down the left hand side is six; where as the average league position of those who choose to favour the right being 16.8.

Serie A Situational Statistics

Gian Piero Gasperini’s side Atalanta lead the way in terms of goals scored with 18 goals in the first seven games. The side from Bergamo have scored 83% of there goals from open play, five more than any other side in the league; a credit to the brand of football being played out of Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia.

Brescia newly promoted to Serie A, have scored 43% of their goals from a set piece which will be worth noting when coming up against the side from Lombardy.

Napoli, Torino and Genoa lead the way in terms of crosses per game, all three sides are averaging 22 per match in the league. Clearly the presence of Fernando Llorente, Andrea Belotti and Christian Kouamé spearheading the attack, making sense of utilising the arial attacks.

Napoli lead the way in terms of passes per game, averaging 541 per match it is clear to see that the side from Naples enjoy having the ball and the use of a Regista under Carlo Ancelotti.

Serie A Team Statistics

Offensive

If you are looking to watch a side who look to dribble the ball a lot then look no further than Fiorentina and Sassuolo, both sides are averaging above 12 dribbles per game. Figures which have been boosted by the likes of Federico Chiesa (2.3 per game) and Frank Ribery (2.9 per game) for La Viola and Jeremie Boga (2.8 per game).

Atalanta (8.3) and Lazio (7) are sides which have the most shots on target per game, Cagliari are the bottom of the standings with only 2.9 shots hitting the target per match.

Defensive

Lecce at present are the side who concede the most shots per game, this will be something which Manager Fabio Liverani will need to address sooner rather than later. Bologna (10.1) and Atalanta (11) are conceding the least amount of shots per game, a worrying statistic for Atalanta seeing as they have conceded 10 goals in the league, the sixth highest.
